These include renewable energies and infrastructure projects.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<section>\r\n\t<h2>Why alternative capital investments?<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tThere are several reasons why alternative capital investments might be worthwhile:\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<ul>\r\n\t\t<li><strong>Security:<\/strong> Asset protection through diversification<\/li>\r\n\t\t<li><strong>Return:<\/strong> Increased return through potentially lucrative \u2013 and therefore possibly riskier \u2013 investments<\/li>\r\n\t\t<li><strong>Sustainability:<\/strong> Acting and\/or demonstrating responsibility toward the environment and society<\/li>\r\n\t<\/ul>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n<section>\r\n\t<h2>Renewable energies as an alternative capital investment<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tAn investment in wind and solar parks or hydroelectric power plants certainly meets the criterion of &#8220;sustainability,&#8221; as renewable energy is the future of energy supply \u2013 keyword climate change.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tAn exception would be a large dam that floods an entire valley. China, for example, has around 50 dams that are 150 meters or taller. Nowadays, if dams are built at all, it&#8217;s typically in developing and emerging countries. In the U.S., and especially in Europe, such major interventions in nature are no longer considered acceptable.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tBy the way, dams fall under both renewable energy and infrastructure categories.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tSince energy demand is unlikely to decrease in the future, investing in renewable energy also appears reasonable in terms of security. Similar to food, demand is unlikely to collapse even in tough times.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tIn terms of return, the energy sector \u2013 at least for private investors \u2013 often lags behind stocks and real estate. These are typically large-scale projects where innovation is not a priority, and the end product, energy, is ultimately a replaceable commodity.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n<section>\r\n\t<h2>Infrastructure as an alternative capital investment<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tAn investment in infrastructure can be sustainable \u2013 or not. Opinions are divided when it comes to dams. In the U.S., and especially in Europe, they are generally not considered sustainable.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tRoads and networks \u2013 everything that connects and moves \u2013 are relatively safe investments. Public entities are often involved, and the end user is typically society as a whole.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tIn terms of returns, infrastructure does not top the charts. But this is common for such secure investments. The returns are considered stable.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tInfrastructure projects often enjoy a strong market position. Competitors can hardly displace them, if at all.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n<section>\r\n\t<h2>Examples of infrastructure as capital investment<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tThe insurance company Allianz, for example, invests in the following infrastructure projects:\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<ul>\r\n\t\t<li>Fiber-optic expansion in Germany<\/li>\r\n\t\t<li>Electric grid in Finland<\/li>\r\n\t\t<li>Sewage tunnel in London<\/li>\r\n\t\t<li>Parking meters for 36,000 parking spaces in Chicago<\/li>\r\n\t<\/ul>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n<section>\r\n\t<h2>Infrastructure and energy as alternatives to real estate and stocks<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tThese two alternative forms of investment are particularly suitable for diversification. However, both sectors are generally less transparent than stocks and especially real estate.\r\n\t<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\r\n\t\tSuch projects are large and complex. This makes it difficult for private investors to evaluate them.
